A gluten-free diet is considered to be helpful in alleviating the side effects of irritable bowel syndrome (IBS). While some studies suggest that increased gluten intake may reduce IBS symptoms, the causal relationship is not yet fully established.

Most gluten-containing products are also high in FODMAPs (fermentable carbohydrates). This means that avoiding gluten may lower your intake of FODMAPs, thus alleviating related side effects.

Additionally, there is a condition known as non-celiac gluten sensitivity. When you consume gluten-containing foods, you may experience gastrointestinal side effects that are unrelated to wheat sensitivity or celiac disease. These side effects may be caused by gluten, FODMAPs, or even factors like amylase-trypsin inhibitors, as gluten-containing foods also contain many other components.

Although we do not fully understand these mechanisms, we at least recognize that avoiding gluten has a positive impact on alleviating IBS side effects. Habitually choosing a gluten-free diet may be beneficial for your health and is worth trying. However, everyone’s body and reactions are different, so it is advisable to consult a healthcare professional or nutritionist before making dietary adjustments.
